As one of the leading providers of connected TV solutions in the Netherlands, Triple works to support as many devices as possible. This compatibility is achieved not by chance but through rigorous testing processes. Here's an exclusive look inside Triple's TV testing suite, where engineers ensure platforms operate seamlessly across various models and brands.

A cutting-edge testing hub

Delivering a refined CTV product requires diligent testing and QA. But thanks to an ever-growing list of platforms, other development teams struggle to keep up with the evolving needs of viewers.

As part of our commitment to ensure our products reach as many viewers as possible, we’ve recently upgraded to a new, state-of-the-art testing facility. This allows us to live-test our products on a wide range of smart TV platforms and hardware. What’s more, our QA team can even test and debug from afar, thanks to our remote testing capabilities.

Meeting viewers where they are

When you first walk into our test suite, it's easy to feel like you're inside a huge electronics store. Hundreds of devices line the walls, with screens visible in every direction (and even more in storage). This nerve center of hardware ensures that we have a round-the-clock testing capability ready to jump on any issues in an instant. Whether we need to test a feature on the latest smart TVs from popular brands like LG and Samsung, or on dongles and set-top boxes commonly used in the US market, such as Roku and Vizio, our facility has it covered.

That's because the testing suite is designed to ‘simulate real-world conditions as closely as we can,' explains Jelle Roos, project manager for Triple. “For example, quickly testing new features and products on a 2014 LG TV alongside the latest 2024 model helps us understand performance discrepancies and ensure full compatibility across different hardware. Then, if a client needs their product to work on a more niche device, we can easily set it up and try it out.”

Testing anywhere

Our TV testing suite is located at Triple’s Alkmaar headquarters, but it can be accessed from anywhere. To enhance our QA process, we use Suitest, a sophisticated remote test automation tool for smart TVs. This setup allows engineers to operate TVs in the suite from anywhere in the world using an infrared controller and cameras aimed at the screens. First introduced during the COVID pandemic as a way to allow developers and QA to continue their work, it’s now an essential tool–particularly for our specialist QA team based in Poland.

This ultimately means that the test suite can be accessed day or night, whether our team is in the office or not. “Thanks to our remote testing capabilities, everyone in the CTV team can quickly and easily access the TVs to debug problems,” says Tijmen Overman, Triple’s CTV Lead. “This ease of access is vital to supporting a vast array of devices–especially as many connected TV audiences do not use the latest hardware and could own TVs that are over a decade old.”

As viewing habits continue to change, Triple will continue to refine its test setup to ensure our CTV products meet viewers where they are. This commitment is reflected in how we work with clients. Testing functionality is nothing without meticulous QA methodology and effective communication.

“We typically have weekly meetings with clients to prioritize backlogs, discuss new features, and address any bugs,” adds Jelle. “This constant interaction helps us stay aligned with client expectations.”
